Entity : Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Department : Graduate Medical Education Location : Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania- 3400 Spruce St Summary : The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for GME Quality & Innovation provides senior leadership for Graduate Medical Education (GME) across Penn Medicine, with primary responsibility for advancing institutional quality, innovation in training and assessment, and strategic use of data to support continuous improvement. Reporting to the Associate Dean/DIO, the AVP works at the system level to design, implement, and sustain frameworks that promote high quality learning environments, effective learner support, and data informed decision making across residency and fellowship programs. This role partners closely with GME leadership, clinical departments, and health system stakeholders to ensure that GME is proactive, improvement oriented, and aligned with institutional priorities. Responsibilities : Institution Wide GME Quality Oversight Provide leadership for institution level GME quality and improvement efforts across 159 residency and fellowship programs. Develop and maintain frameworks to monitor program performance, stability, and learning environments. Partner with the Associate Dean/DIO, Assistant DIOs, and the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) to synthesize trends, identify risk, and support informed decision making. Lead or support ACGME required Special Reviews, ensuring alignment with institutional quality improvement processes. Data, Dashboards, and Institutional Insight Lead the strategic use of data and analytics to support GME quality, improvement, and planning. Collaborate with analytics, IT, and operational partners to ensure reliable GME data definitions, integrity, and reporting. Oversee and/or collaborate with leaders in the Office of Evaluation and Assessment and Academic Programs Office on the development of dashboards and analytic tools that support: Early identification of program level and learner level concerns. Longitudinal analysis of educational outcomes. Visibility into institutional trends affecting learning environments. Work with the Director of Institutional Accreditation and Compliance to support preparation of the Annual Institutional Review (AIR), including selection and analysis of process improvement metrics and contribution to narrative sections. Innovation in Training and Assessment Lead initiatives to innovate residency and fellowship training, informed by adult learning theory, organizational development, and systems thinking. Collaborate with PSOM and UPHS leaders to develop and scale approaches related to: Learner assessment and evaluation redesign. Feedback and coaching models. Precision education strategies across programs. Responsible use of educational technologies and artificial intelligence in education. Ensure innovation efforts remain aligned with accreditation requirements and institutional standards. Learner Support and Coaching Capacity Build and oversee institutional approaches for supporting struggling GME trainees, including coaching and remediation structures. Partner with faculty leaders to support early identification and effective intervention for learners experiencing difficulty. Develop resources and training for coaches and faculty involved in learner support. Faculty and Staff Development In collaboration with the Associate Dean for GME, develop and oversee implementation of institution wide faculty development initiatives for Program Directors and Core Faculty, focusing on assessment quality, feedback, and educational leadership. Work with the Director of GME to support program coordinator professional development, recognizing their role in program quality and sustainability. Work with the Director of GME to promote consistency of program coordinator performance across departments. Strategic Planning and Program Growth Participate in institutional discussions regarding GME program growth, contraction, or development, informed by workforce needs and system priorities. Provide analytic and educational insight to guide planning decisions related to program capacity and sustainability. Integration and Cross Institutional Collaboration Support potential integration of additional Sponsoring Institutions under Penn Medicine GME governance. Assist with alignment of policies, quality oversight, and regulatory processes during integration efforts. Collaborate with the Director of Institutional Accreditation & Compliance to ensure adequate oversight capacity during periods of increased regulatory activity. Leadership and Collaboration Serve as a senior partner to program leadership as well as institutional stakeholders, particularly those involved in the med ed continuum. Lead cross functional initiatives requiring coordination across education, clinical operations, analytics, and quality. Mentor and support staff and emerging leaders within the GME enterprise. Promote a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and learning. Working Conditions Office and clinical education environment with regular interaction across departments and hospitals. Hybrid work may be available consistent with institutional policy. Periodic travel between Penn Medicine sites and occasional external meetings. Provides functional and/or direct supervision to project teams, assigned staff, or consultants, as appropriate. Supports leadership development and performance management within areas of responsibility. Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures. Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization. Education or Equivalent Experience: Bachelor's Degree is required. 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in graduate medical education, academic medicine, or related healthcare leadership roles, is required. Demonstrated expertise in institution level GME oversight and ACGME expectations is required. Master's Degree in education, healthcare administration, organizational development, or related field, is preferred. Experience working with or at the ACGME or in national GME leadership roles is preferred. Familiarity with GME information systems, evaluation platforms, or learning management systems is preferred.
