JOB SUMMARY:?

Emergency Medicine Physicians are responsible for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of emergency medical conditions and injuries while providing clinical leadership and supervision of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in accordance with hospital policy and state regulations.

This role offers the opportunity to practice broad-spectrum emergency medicine in a collegial, community-focused environment with strong administrative and specialty support.

No trauma designation

12-Hour Shifts

Mix of adult and pediatric patients

APP coverage with physician supervision

Core Clinical Responsibilities

Provide direct patient care in the Emergency Department.

Maintain board certification and appropriate state licensure.

Model high standards of clinical excellence, professionalism, and ethical conduct.

Support evidence-based practice and implementation of clinical guidelines.

Participate in quality assurance and peer review activities.

Medical Leadership & Oversight

Work in conjunction with BMH medical director to provide? leadership for all ED physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) at Bluffton Community Hospital and Hilton Head Island FSED.

Establish and enforce clinical policies, protocols, and standards of care.

Oversee physician credentialing, onboarding, mentoring, and performance evaluations.

Address clinical performance issues and promote professional development.

Serve as liaison between ED providers and hospital administration.

Quality & Performance Improvement

Lead quality improvement (QI) initiatives to enhance patient safety, outcomes, and satisfaction.

Monitor key performance metrics (e.g., door-to-provider time, length of stay, LWBS rates).

Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission).

Oversee morbidity and mortality reviews and case discussions.

Promote patient-centered care and service excellence.

Operations & Throughput Management

Collaborate with Director of Hospital-Based Physician Services and nursing leadership to optimize patient flow.

Develop strategies to reduce ED length of stay and improve efficiency.

Participate in disaster preparedness and emergency management planning.

Assist in staffing models and scheduling oversight.

Support implementation of new technologies and workflow improvements.

Financial & Strategic Responsibilities

Contribute to budget planning and cost containment initiatives.

Monitor resource utilization and productivity benchmarks.

Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure compliance with EMTALA and other federal/state regulations.

Partner with risk management on adverse event review and mitigation strategies.

Promote documentation accuracy and coding compliance.

Address medico-legal issues in collaboration with hospital leadership.

Education & Community Engagement

Encourage continuing medical education and professional development.

Represent the ED in medical staff meetings and hospital committees.

Foster collaborative relationships with EMS, specialists, and community providers.

EMTALA Compliance

Comply fully with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) by providing an appropriate Medical Screening Examination (MSE) to all individuals presenting to the Emergency Department and determining the presence or absence of an emergency medical condition.

Stabilize patients with identified emergency medical conditions within the capability and capacity of the facility or arrange appropriate transfer in accordance with EMTALA regulations and hospital policies.

Ensure all transfers are medically appropriate, properly documented, and coordinated with receiving facilities and transport services.

Collaborate with nursing staff and ancillary services to ensure EMTALA compliance is maintained at all times.

Participate in EMTALA-related education, audits, and quality improvement initiatives as required.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited medical school

Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program

Previous leadership experience preferred

Licensure & Certification:

Current, unrestricted South Carolina medical license (M.D. or D.O.)

Active state and federal controlled substance licenses

Board certification in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM).)

ONGOING COMPETENCIES

  • Annual Review of Fire/Safety/Disaster Plan

Significant standing, sitting, bending, and some lifting; good manual dexterity, vision and hearing required. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues in a fast-paced office environment. Must be able to multi-task and handle a variety of issues at one time.
